Our Scout hut has supported generations of young people in Bassett since the early 1980s - and it’s now ready for a much-needed renovation.
Over the past few months, we’ve been working closely with our leaders to understand what they need to continue delivering an outstanding programme for every young person. The plans below are the result of that work and reflect what will make the building safer, more practical and more inclusive for all.
Our aim is simple: to create a Scout HQ that is safe, welcoming and fully accessible, so every young person can take part in Scouting - and so the wider community can make greater use of the space too.
Below you’ll find the proposed design, along with details of the improvements we hope to deliver.
We’re currently working on plans to:
Create a safer, more practical space for cooking and badge work
Utilise the kitchen as a second break-out area for activities
Improve layout and storage so leaders can run activities more easily
Make better use of the serving hatch and access to the outside space
Upgrade tired facilities
Improve layout so they’re easier to manage and keep clean
Add DDA-compliant and more inclusive facilities so everyone can attend
Step-free access into the hut and wider doors
Safer, clearer routes around the building and to fire exits
Better lighting, signage and doorways to support all users
Open up some of the windows to allow for more natural light and ventilation
Make the hall and ancillary rooms easier to use for events and camps
Support digital and AV equipment for modern programme delivery
Enable more local groups and partners (including nearby schools and the pool charity) to use the space
These works will be delivered in phases, depending on funding, so we can keep the group running and minimise disruption to the programme.
